The Championships where held this year at Welwyn Garden City on a day that continually threatened a downpour. Though there where a few showers the worst of the weather held off until the start of the final part of the Competition, the Super 7’s. So they got wet whilst most of the rest of us didn’t.

Bev Anderson, Jasmin Taylor and Andy Pirie Won their age groups, Laura and Jessie Bowling achieved 2nd in theirs and Rory Yeung, Phuk Troung and Paul Bowling where Placed 3rd. The Vikings where also 2nd in the Senior / Masters Dual slalom.

ERSA Summer league 2006.

The Third summer league race was held at Bassingbourn Snowsport Centre on yet another sunny Sunday, before the world cup match. A reduced Vikings Contingent of only 15 Skiers more than pulled their weight to collect 2 golds (Bev Anderson and Jasmin Taylor), 1 Silver (Jacqui King) and 2 Bronzes (Chris Anderson and Emily Wood). Bev also came 3rd overall in the Female race.

The Second Summer League race, at Suffolk followed on from the success of the Suffolk Club National. On a Sunday so hot we had to abandon the Rainbow event. 29 Vikings raced and won 2 Golds (Jessie Bowling and Bev Anderson), 4 Silvers (Jasmin Taylor, Andy Pirie, Amanda Mallet and Paul Bowling) and 1 Bronze (Craig Wright). There are photos by Steve Alvey here

The First Summer League race of the Year was held at Hemel Hempstead as usual. 19 Vikings raced and won 2 Golds (John Radford and Bev Anderson), 1 Silver (Paul Bowling) and 1 Bronze (Jessie Bowling).

Hemel Club National and Thompson ERSA Grand Prix (20th and 21st of May).

The Vikings National race squad expanded to Eleven racers, ten in the Club national and 5in the Grand Prix with Izzy Yeung Competing in her first national race. As there is a drought in effect we only had to hide under the gazebo occasionaly during the Club National but we did have to take cover for most of the Grand Prix.

Bev Anderson came first in the Masters Female Category in the Club National but, due to a spectacular fall, could only make second in the Grand Prix.

Liz Palfrey came 3rd in the Junior 1 catagory and 5th overall in the Grand Prix.

Norfolk Club National and Thompson ERSA Grand Prix (7th and 8th of May).

The Vikings sent 10 representatives to races at Norwich 9 to the Club National and 6 for the Grand Prix. The Club national was Held on a mainly sunny day though it did get cold during the third run :-) and was followed by a band in the Clubhouse which was advertised as being called Snowflex, but had renamed itself “Hurts like Dendex” in honour of the TD.

Sunday started off very damp, which made the slope run better but made everyone dress up and hide under the Gazebo.

Bev Anderson came first in the Masters Female Category in both races and Jasmine Taylor came Third in the Children 2 female category of the club national.

British Masters Scottish Championships 2006.

By the time we got to Glenshee the Vikings contingent had reduced to two, as for that matter had ERSA‘s. Friday was an enjoyable if energetic training day (the lift serving the race piste was broken so there was a lot of traversing over lightly covered heather) on Saturday 11th of March the GS was held, luckily the lift had been repaired and it had snowed all night, so it was possible to use the race track. The event is held over three runs down the same course, the best two to count. On Sunday, the Slalom was to be held, but high winds and too much drifting snow prevented the roads up to the ski area from opening and the race was abandoned.

In the GS Bev Anderson Won her age group and was the fastest lady and Chris Anderson was second in the 40 to 50 age group.

Kandahar British Masters Courmayeur Italy 2006.

A reduced Vikings contingent decamped to Courmayeur for the British leg of the FIS Masters Cup this year. Though we still outnumbered the representatives of the rest of ERSA (John Williams who is the British Masters Team Captain) and for that matter L&SERSA (two racers) The Training week provided by SnowsportGB and coached by Ed Pirie, was as usual very useful and enjoyed by all. The Slalom was held over two runs on Saturday the 4th of February in wonderful weather which continued on the Sunday when the single run GS was held.

In the slalom, Bev was third in her age group 3rd in the British championship, and Twelfth overall but a fall in the GS ruined her chances in the combined.

The Vikings team consisted of John Radford and Chris and Bev Anderson.

Next Years British Masters Championship will again be run by the Kandahar Ski Club at Courmayeur on the first weekend in February preceded by a week of training. So if you are interested (and over 30) speak to one of the team or follow the “Masters” link on the Left.

ERSA Champs 2005.

Some 20 Vikings skiers and their supporters managed to find their way through the fog to Bassingbourne for the ERSA Champs, and by the time they had started the race you could actually see the top of the slope! It proved to be a successful day for the Vikings (see total of the haul below), with the Children’s and Seniors dual slalom teams both winning the titles and the Vikings finishing just one point behind Norfolk in the Overall Club event, our best ever result! So well done to all the skiers.

Five Vikings won their age categories; Jasmine Taylor, Liz Palfrey, Laura Bowling, Andy Pirie and Bev Anderson.

Special mention goes to Liz Palfrey, who not only finished first in her age category, but also finished first overall in the Females event. In fact, Liz’s time on her first run was only bettered by one other skier. Impressive stuff!!

Well done also to Laura Bowling, who finished fourth overall, Jessie Bowling, who finished sixth, and Bev Anderson, who finished eighth. Four Vikings in the top ten!

In the Men’s overall, congrats to Callum Peace who was fifth overall.
